Heather Smith, cover model for 2008, beat breast cancer in a big way by undergoing a double mastectomy at age 25 and bouncing back through extensive reconstructive surgeries to get to where she is here: on a beach in Florida in a bikini. You go, girl!
Cancer Connection has received a supply of very interesting calendars from a local Austin photographer named Eric Overton. These 2008 wall calendars feature women (some of them from Austin) who have survived various types of cancer. They are a mix of professional models and “never-modeled-before” soccer moms ranging in age from 22-58. But they all have something in common… their courage and strength.
We first met Eric at the 2006 LIVESTRONG Summit, where he identified the calendar project on his personal action plan. He stated that his plan provided the motivation he needed to complete the calendar project. In Eric’s own words, “Each and every person you see here rose to the challenge of beating cancer. So if this calendar project succeeds in any way beyond simply making money for research, treatment, or patient support, it’ll be because those facing the fight of their lives drew from it at least some sign that the person who came out of it is not a weaker, crippled, marred version of the one who went in.”
Along with the photos, each month includes the survivor's story in their own words, along with medical tips on early detection strategies for certain cancers.
